Where is Leonardo da Vinci buried?

Leonardo da Vinci, the brilliant Italian genius of the Renaissance, is not buried in Italy—as many might assume—but in France, in the heart of the Loire Valley!

In 1516, toward the end of his life, Leonardo accepted an invitation from King Francis I of France and took up residence at the Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, just a short walk from the royal castle. He spent his final three years there, celebrated and supported, until his passing on May 2, 1519.

His final resting place? The Chapel of Saint-Hubert, a charming Gothic chapel within the grounds of the Château d’Amboise. A tombstone inside the chapel marks what is widely believed to be Leonardo’s grave, although some uncertainty remains due to the destruction of his original tomb during the Wars of Religion.

Visiting the Clos Lucé and the Château d’Amboise today is like stepping into the world of a Renaissance legend—where art, science, and French royal history intertwine. It’s also a beautiful reminder of the rich cultural exchange between France and Italy.
